In this unit we will begin learning the Imperfect Past Tense, and in the next unit, we will focus on distinguishing the two past tenses

The main focus will be on mastering the preterite, and reflexive pronouns

Other grammar points include mental reaction verbs (like gustar) and indefinite and negative expressions.

The cultural focus is Peru.


Be sure to study the remaining irregular verbs in the preterite tense.  

IR stem changing verbs and the rest of the radical irregulars.

Radical irregular verbs (add these endings to the irregular stems below)
e iste o
imos isteis ieron (jeron)
tener-tuv_ (all _tener verbs), estar-estuv_, andar-anduv_, saber-sup_, haber-hub_, caber-cup_, poder-pud_, querer-quis_, poner-pus_ (all _poner verbs), venir-vin_, hacer-hic_ (hizo)

"J group": decir-dij_ (dijeron), traer-traj_, conducir-conduj_ (all ducir verbs)

 

3rd person stem-changing -ir verbs SERVIR
serví serviste sirvió
servimos servisteis (sirvieron) sirvieron
e-i: divertirse, sentirse, pedir repetir vestirse reírse (verbs which were e-ie in present are e-i in preterite)

o-u: morir, dormir

1st Person Orthographic Irregulars
jugué jugaste jugó
jugamos jugasteis (jugaron) jugaron
gar-gué: pagar, pegar, agregar

car-qué: tocar, pecar, pescar, platicar, masticar

zar-cé: almorzar, cazar, empezar

 

3rd person orthographic irregulars (with accents)
leí leíste leyó
leímos leísteis leyeron
oír, caer, all -uir verbs, reír (also a 3rd person stem change)
