Vol. 2, no. 1, spring 2001

a journal of ideas from the students and teachers Minneapolis College

The theme for Capstone Magazine this semester is "International Dilemmas." The students of English 1111-8 were given the assignments to choose a major problem facing the world today, find the dilemma built into it, and to try solve it. Some of the challenges they took on were world overpopulation, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the AIDS epidemic in Africa, saving disappearing languages, the civil wars in Africa, the conflict between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, and ways to extradite criminals across international borders.

They presented their research papers in panel discussions in class. Often the panelists disagreed with each other, and the class then voted on what they thought the best solution would be. A document that offers an overview of the class decisions appears on the page, "Document of International Dilemmas." Some individual essays will appear later in the semester.
